There is no old media and there is no new media. Stop saying it. Now.

social-marketingPR companies are struggling. Ad agencies are freaking out. And clients are desperate for an answer to their problems. As budgets get cut, advertising and marketing activities are often the first to go to the chopping block–which, of course, leads LESS future sales, spelling increasing doom for many companies. And now, here they all come marching into our offices truly thinking that social media can save the day. After all, it costs less than traditional media, right?

Social media won’t save your business. Social media is not a replacement for traditional marketing/PR techniques, it’s not even a medium of its own and it cannot hide your flaws. Want your company to do better? Improve. Innovate. Adapt your thinking for a generation of people that have ready access to information anywhere at any time and aren’t as easily dissuaded by fancy advertising.

Succeeding in today’s world is simple. Be the best version of yourself that you can. Think before you speak/post, customize press releases for reporters/bloggers and accept that this internet thing isn’t going away. Start realizing that Twitter, email, IM, real forums, blogs, and text messages are different. Don’t be scared of them. And don’t ignore them. And don’t let a non-expert lead you through them. There’s no manual. And there is not standard. You have to simply start talking. That it’s – just start talking, and listening, and then using all of that “free” research study outcome information to improve your company, or shut it down before it’s too late.
